Youth Government Day Council Meeting

Monday, May 7, 2018

Six graders from Pelham Park Middle School and their teachers will visit Pelham City Hall to gain first hand knowledge about municipal government and services. Students tour the administration offices, revenue, court, police, fire, water and public works and the Pelham City Schools offices to learn how each one provides services to the city. The students hold a mock election and elect a mayor, five city council members, a student for each city department head position, a school board president and superintendent and a chamber of commerce president. On Youth Government Day each elected student is paired with the city official they represent and spend a half day observing how city duties are conducted. Monday night immediately following the city council meeting, student officials conduct their own council meeting. Each student department head gives a report of what they learned and offers suggestions on how they would improve the city.
