[ARCHIVED] Pelham Racquet Hosts 2023 Learn to Play Tennis Community Day

May is a busy month at Pelham Racquet Club. Not only is the club hosting a major tournament with noteworthy pros on the lineup, but it is also offering a chance for the general public to gain exposure to the game. The annual PRC Learn to Play Tennis Community Day is set for Saturday, May 13, which is the weekend before the opening of the USTA Women's Pro Circuit Tournament. The free Community Day event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Pelham Racquet Club. "The event is open to all ages, from children to adults. You'll have a chance to get free pointers from the PRC tennis pros and play for free. It's a chance for anyone who wants to learn the game or sharpen their skills," said Chaney Mills, Director of the Pelham Racquet Club. There will be children's activities such as face painting, and an inflatable, plus free ice cream for all. See the flyer below for complete details.

In addition to the Community Day, Pelham Racquet Club and the Pelham Tennis Center are offering an inexpensive, more in-depth option for adults who decide they want to learn more. "The Ready, Set, Tennis" program is a good value. You pay 30 dollars to USTA and receive a racquet, four hours of instruction, and a shirt," said Mills. The Pelham Racquet Club will offer the program on Tuesdays starting May 25 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., and Thursday nights starting May 18 from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The same program is offered at the Pelham Tennis Center at City Park on Wednesdays starting May 17 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. To register, visit Ready, Set Tennis and choose your preferred location.

The USTA Women's Pro Classic is a big event for Pelham Racquet Club. The play opens on Monday, May 15, and culminates with the championship round on Sunday, May 21. The annual tournament is sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation. The tournament is typically a $25,000 event, but the ITF and USTA chose to elevate this tournament to a $60,000 event in 2022. With the high stakes, the USTA Pro Circuit Tour serves as a pathway to the U.S. Open and tour-level competition for aspiring tennis players and is a frequent battleground for established players who are looking to earn points and prize money. Mills said spectators can see some great competitive tennis for free, so be sure to take advantage of the opportunity right here in Pelham.
