The City of Pelham is committed to creating a vibrant and sustainable community that meets the needs and aspirations of our residents. One of the key ways we achieve this goal is through strategic investments in capital projects. In accordance with Plan Pelham, the City’s comprehensive plan adopted in 2020, these projects are carefully planned and executed to enhance our city's infrastructure, public spaces, and overall quality of life.
The City has a budget for improvements like the one underway at the Pelham Racquet Club. City leaders do not consider upgrades in recreational and entertainment spaces indulgent expenses; rather a planned investment in the city's long-term prosperity. By setting aside funds for upgrades, a city can avoid the financial strain of dealing with sudden, major issues that arise from neglecting its infrastructure.
Think of it like maintaining your car. You set aside a budget for regular check-ups and improvements to prevent a breakdown on the highway. Cities, too, allocate funds for upgrades to prevent their infrastructure from reaching a breaking point. It's a proactive approach that ultimately saves money by preventing the need for emergency repairs or extensive renovations.
Renovations began in January and are running right on schedule. The estimated timeline for completion is April or May, provided crews do not run into any unforeseen circumstances.
Up until now, PRC offered stringing services without a dedicated space for the equipment. Two stringing machines are in operation daily, and a third is set up for larger tournaments. Between the two machines and needed supplies, plus the people needed to do the work, a dedicated space was needed to be able to continue offering the service while providing the level of customer service people expect from staff.
Previously, the pro shop was in the back of the building with one window, which was not ideal because it was not highly visible. In recent years, PRC has increased inventory and offers a variety of tennis brands, clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, chapstick, socks, hair accessories, logo apparel, and more. The new space will be visible when you walk in and will have display areas.
The need for more storage was quickly identified as a top priority with this clubhouse reconfiguration. Two new temperature-controlled storage areas will be constructed outside, one dedicated to vending services to better serve the patron. This is where the ice machine, bottle filler/water fountain, and drink machine will be located. The other space will allow PRC to have a locked space for tennis balls, food, pro shop inventory, and tournament supplies.
The second floor of the building is being closed off to create a dedicated space for events. There will be an option for rentals once complete.
