Pelham Civic Complex to Host "Try Hockey for Free" Event as Youth & Adult Hockey Booms in Alabama
The Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena is giving the community a chance to hit the ice with its Try Hockey for Free event on Friday, April 19. This exciting event welcomes children and adults who have never played hockey before, offering them a no-cost opportunity to learn the basics in a fun and supportive environment. Whether you’re a child looking to join a team or an adult eager to try a new sport, this event is the perfect way to experience hockey firsthand.
Youth hockey has seen a surge in popularity across the southeast region, with Alabama emerging as a surprising standout. According to USA Hockey, the number of registered youth hockey players in Alabama has grown to over 1,200—a figure that continues to rise year after year. The Pelham Civic Complex, home to several youth hockey programs, has played a key role in this growth by offering opportunities for kids to get involved early.
The Try Hockey for Free event serves as the first step in the development process for future players. Skaters at the event will have the chance to sign up for Little Toros Learn to Skate, an eight-week program designed to teach the fundamental skating skills needed for hockey. From there, players can advance to the Learn to Play Hockey program, which will prepare them for the Pelham Youth House League, and eventually open the door to travel hockey with the PHDA Jr. Bulls or Birmingham Jr. Bulls.
All necessary gear and equipment will be provided at no cost, and no prior experience is required. Coaches and volunteers will be on hand to guide participants through their first hockey experience, making it an exciting and accessible event for everyone.
