Job Opportunity - Building Zoning Official


The City of Pelham is accepting applications and resumes for the full time position of Building and Zoning Official.  This position leads the city in activities of inspecting new and existing buildings and structures to ensure conformance to building, grading, and zoning laws and approved plans, specifications, and standards by performing the following duties:

  • Review all building permit application and proposed plans and perform inspections for compliance with all applicable provisions of City Ordinances and adopted codes.
  • Issue all building permits and maintain records; Issue all certificates of occupancy and maintain records.
  • Issue and renew where applicable all temporary use permits and maintain records.  
  • Inspect residential, commercial, industrial, and other buildings during and after construction to ensure that components such as footings, floor framing, completed framing, chimneys, and stairways meet provisions of building, grading, zoning, and safety laws and approved plans, specifications, and standards.
  • Observes conditions and issues notices for corrections to persons responsible for conformance.
  • Obtains evidence and prepares report concerning violations which have not been corrected.
  • Interprets legal requirements and recommends compliance procedures to contractors, craft workers, and owners.
  • Keeps inspection records and prepares reports for use by administrative or judicial authorities.
  • Conducts surveys of existing buildings to determine lack of prescribed maintenance, housing violations, or hazardous conditions.

Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from four year university and/ or at least five years related experience or equivalent credentials.  

Must have a valid Alabama Driver’s License, Certified Building Official Certification; Certified Building Inspector Certification; and Planning and Zoning Certification.  Other certifications may be required after employment.

Construction experience and knowledge of the State of Alabama Code Title 11 as well as familiarity with construction industry operations preferred.

One to three years supervisory experience preferred with organization skills, assigning and directing work, performance reviews and addressing complaints and resolving problems. Compensation is $79,194 - $100,320, depending on experience, education, and other training.  The City of Pelham offers an excellent benefits package.
